Admission requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology programme
Group work on a given biotechnological production process. What is the production flow from raw material to product? What unit operations and chemical and biotechnological processes are involved? For instance, flow charts, process descriptions and calculations of single processes (e.g. mass balances) will be prepared based on the production process, in full or in part. All resulting project work will be presented and discussed in one comprehensive project report.

The student must obtain the ability to independently form a general view of a major biotechnological production, comprising the ability to set up mass balances for parts of a process-technological plant as well as the ability to describe chemical technological and biotechnological conditions relative to the production.
On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- Understand and explain principles of setting up simple stationary mass balances
- Understand and explain the design and function of selected unit operations
- Understand and explain process flow charts of a biotechnological production
- Understand and explain methods for planning, organisation and management of projects
- Describe and calculate simple process-technological plants, comprising the ability to identify basic principles and components
- Make simple calculations of selected unit operations
- Explain and set up simple mass balances
- Explain the chemistry/biology behind a selected biotechnological process
- Find and apply relevant academic information by way of textbooks, databases, and the similar
- Explain the process flow of the project with focus on the group's collaboration
- Assess and provide a perspective of the technical and biotechnological challenges pertaining to a given production plant
- Collaborate on a project in a group
- Complete a piece of project work using typical techniques and tools used within industry for proect-work (project planning, organisation and management), comprising the ability to draw up a collaborative agreement, set up and maintain project and time plans and to hold project meetings
- Document a piece of project work and its results in a written project report, on the basis of a given set of guidelines
- Give an oral presentation of the project work and its result
Teaching in class, assignment work , project supervision and company visit
Qualifications for examination participation
- Fulfilment of the requirements for compulsory participation as given in the study programme part 2.4
- Participation in all planned company visits
- Participation in all planned teaching activities involving external lecturers
- Submission and acceptance of compulsory assignments in relation to the project
If a student does not fulfill the requirements for compulsory participation she/he can be excluded from the project group and hence, shall do an individual project.
All project deliverables shall be performed and submitted subject to the guidelines set out by the course manager.
Examination and aids
- Submission of project report
- Oral examination, where each group participates together. The students present the project together as a group. Duration of oral presentation: 15 min. Hereafter, students are examined individually by way of questions from a panel. Duration of the individual examination: 15 min. pr. student.
Permitted aids: Project report. No access to the internet.
In the final assessment, the following elements constitute: Project report (50%) and the individual performance at the oral presentation and examination (50%).
The 7-point grading scale
